5 Ways to Increase Your Intimacy with God

As believers, many of us struggle with the idea of growing closer to God.  Some don’t know how to deepen their relationship with Him,  while others may not even realize they are missing something by not pursuing true intimacy with Him.  Perhaps you’ve called on Him for salvation, strive to obey His commands, and yet find yourself distant from Him in a deeper, relational sense.  If this resonates with you, the following steps can help increase your intimacy with God.

  1.  Confirm your salvation.
Take time to evaluate your life and the fruit it bears. Are you truly a follower of Christ, or are you  just going through the motions? The foundation of intimacy with God starts with the assurance of your salvation. Take a moment to reflect on your personal relationship with Jesus – do you truly know Him, or have you only known about Him? (2 Corinthians 13:5)
  2.   Consider your church.
The church is a community of believers designed to support you in your spiritual growth. Make sure you are attending a Bible-believing, God-glorifying, Christ-exalting church that encourages you to grow in your faith. Commit to being a regular part of this community, not just in attendance but in active participation. Church is vital for accountability, encouragement, and deepening your relationship with God.
  3.   Cast your cares.
Prayer is the primary way we communicate with God. Make it a vital part of your daily life. Prayer isn’t just for asking God for things; it’s a way to express your heart, seek His will, and listen to His voice. Scripture teaches us to cast our cares upon Him because He cares for us. Develop a habit of turning to Him with your worries, your joys, and everything in between. Communication is the key to any healthy relationship, and this is especially true in our relationship with God. (1 Peter 5:7)
  4.   Contemplate the Scripture.
The Bible is God’s living Word, breathed out by Him and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. Make time each day to read, study, meditate, and memorize Scripture. The more you immerse yourself in God’s Word, the more you will grow in your understanding of His character, His promises, and His desires for your life. (2 Timothy 3:16)
  5.   Count your blessings.
As you go through your day, take time to reflect on the countless blessings God has bestowed upon you. Every good gift comes from Him, and acknowledging this truth helps you grow in gratitude and worship. Counting your blessings shifts your focus from your circumstances to the goodness of God, deepening your intimacy with Him as you recognize His faithfulness in your life. (James 1:17)

By applying these steps, you can cultivate a deeper and more intimate relationship with God. Remember, intimacy with God is not about striving harder; it’s about drawing near to Him, knowing He desires to draw near to you (James 4:8). Let these practices guide you toward a closer walk with your Creator.
